Who a new concrete driveway suits
If your current driveway is cracked, sunken or still gravel, or a new home or extension needs a driveway and crossover, a properly planned slab is the fix. On Toowoomba's clay heavy black soil, the result depends less on the finish and more on what sits underneath and how the slab is built to move.
What a sound driveway is made of
A good driveway quote describes four things: the prepared base, the slab thickness, the concrete strength grade in MPa and the steel reinforcement mesh. Many residential car driveways are specified around 100 mm thick, with thicker sections where trucks, caravans or boats will park. Ask for each item in writing so quotes can be compared fairly.
Why the base matters more on black soil
Reactive soil swells when wet and shrinks as it dries, so a slab poured straight onto it can lift or crack. Site preparation usually means removing soft topsoil, then placing and compacting a crushed rock base so the concrete has even support. Good drainage away from the slab helps keep moisture changes steady.
Control joints and curing decisions
All concrete shrinks as it cures, so joints are cut or formed to give it a planned place to crack. Joint spacing, plus keeping the surface damp in the early days, has a big say in how tidy the driveway still looks years later. A finish such as plain broom, coloured or exposed aggregate then adds the kerb appeal.
Council and the crossover
The section between your boundary and the road, called the crossover, sits on council land, so Toowoomba Regional Council usually has its own rules and approval steps for it. Check with council before work starts, and ask that your quote states whether the crossover is included and who handles the application.
Next step for your driveway quote
Share the rough size, what surface is there now, the finish you like and your suburb. Plans and measurements are not needed at this stage. If the job suits, a licensed and insured local concreter can look at the block and set out a free quote in writing covering base, grade, mesh and joints.

How it works
- 1
Describe the driveway
Note the rough length and width, the current surface, any heavy vehicles that will use it and the finish you prefer.
- 2
Site look and written quote
A concreter checks levels, soil, drainage and access, then sets out the base, thickness, MPa grade, mesh, joints and crossover in writing.
- 3
Base, mesh and pour
Old material is removed, the base is compacted, formwork and mesh go in, then the concrete is placed, finished and jointed.
- 4
Curing and first use
The slab is kept damp while it gains strength. Foot traffic comes first, and cars wait until the concreter confirms it is ready.
